Bill Ducett: the thrill of turning students into teachers

(June 16, 2009) Bill Ducett, instructional Assistant Professor in the University of Illinois, College of Education gets teach students in a pivotal moment in their training and in their lives.

Ducett teaches several courses and Curriculum Department instructions at Illinois State, but few are as exciting as I & C 212, problems in secondary education. This is an introductory class where Ducett introduces students to the concepts of becoming a teacher of secondary level "watching" contemporary issues involved in schooling, curriculum and politics. "

During his class, draws on his vast Ducett experience to provide authentic examples for students. This is also the time where students get their first taste of teaching through comments. This is an important stage of educational development of a student in which they are often at an impasse.

"It is very important, sort of a jumping off point," Ducett described. "Gives students the opportunity to evaluate, ' is this what I want to do? ' To see what being a teacher is all about, seeing a number of issues that face teachers. "

This is an exciting time and important for its students. Ducett Gets a shudder too, to provide anecdotes from his career as a teacher in an elementary school and high schools, an administrator at a school and a parish school and as a non-tenure track Professor to help inform students who have an important decision to make.

"It is exciting. I hope that my students understand the call that the teaching is "said Ducett. "It is not just a job, is a vocation, is a vocation. I want to make sure that students understand the complexity of the work of the schools. Is a 24/7kind of the thing. I try to excite my children and fussing about how to become a teacher. I want them to understand how energizing teaching is, as no two days are always the same, as many opportunities as teacher affect children's lives. "

Never half, if you first break spring or autumn break, Ducett has always someone take the fatal decision that teaching is not their call. "I feel sad about that, but on the same hand, is great because why should invest a lot of time and effort into this, and when they go to student teach discover," Oh boy, this is not for me. ""

Ducett also helps students once come into the classroom as a teacher. Each semester Besides teaching them a C & I class, directs a handful of student interns in Professional Development School (PDS), a program of student teaching. Ducett oversees specifically at Woodruff High School in Peoria, Illinois Ducett saw the PDS from Woodruff program planning phase for when ISU sent its first students in 2006.

"Once I walked in that door, I'm not a student anymore. I am a teacher pre-service or a future teacher. I want them to look always a classroom from the perspective of a teacher. When we flip sides of the desk, I think that makes our students aware of how much work and effort that must really know how to be a teacher effectiveness, "said Ducett's transition from student to teacher.

Other classes of Ducett help students with Classroom Management and lesson planning. Ducett uses a very meticulous and tested for lesson planning, its students are not always attractive. But to see that the value in its style of lesson planning is easy, especially once its students a step in front of a classroom full of children.

"As a student you know when a teacher is not quite ready, or fiddling around. This is an opportunity for children to get into trouble. The heart and soul of a well-managed Classroom lesson plan is a well thought-out. Get students engaged, prepared materials, have you thought about things, the chances of things going on and jump in the air are much less. "

After Ducett arms students with the ability to design precisely lessons and manage their Classroom, they are able to maximize their PDS experiences. A group in particular their experience PDS in a presentation for the Conference, a Conference that provides opportunities for professional development for educators throughout the State.

A group of about five students turned the literacy portion of their content in a presentation class PDS's success attracted the attention of several administrators across the State of Illinois. One student in particular was able to parlay an introduction to the Conference in a job.

"Wow, I saw that unfold before my eyes," Ducett recalled. "Students who pass through the PDS pass through the same things that make teachers first year. They come almost as a second year, teachers are much more capable. Students get calls by administrators from across the country looking at those guys as candidates really good. "

With the exception of two years which he spent as a Dean of a parish school, Ducett was affiliated with Illinois State in the last 25 years. He earned his Masters degree from ISU and ISU brothers who attended. Despite a degree in a University, he came to appreciate his time in Illinois and States that he has cultivated relations with the people around him.

"I couldn't imagine my life without having been involved with this site, working here with all my colleagues and students that I had. Illinois State is what makes this community so excited. The community owes much to this place. Even if I went to Bradley as an undergrad, I'm pretty much a Redbird fan all the way. I can't imagine not to teach or to be here for some reason. I know that I have to go some time, but my career at this point was really exciting. "
