Join travels to California for spring break 2010

(March 3, 2010) Seventeen members of the Group of students, urban needs in Teacher Education (), will travel to California for five days to observe and experience the needs of higher education in urban public schools in Los Angeles.

UNITED itinerary includes a meeting with educators, leaders and young people in the Los Angeles public schools and community organizations, traveling through public transport, walking the streets and eat in restaurants in the neighborhood. "Helping with a project of community-based service, participants will be close to live life as those who live and learn we do," said UNITED faculty sponsor Dr. Lucille Eckrich.

During their journey, meet with the famous educator, Rafe Esquith, who visited ISU this past fall. Esquith wrote books on his original teaching strategies has received many awards and respected for his work in urban education.

Join will spend a full day of classroom work, allowing members to experience a full shadow-16 7: 0: 0 and Rafe Esquith. "We will be observing its strategies in the classroom and have discussions with him periodically throughout the day. Rafe was kind enough to open her classroom doors to urban teachers pre-ISU, "said UNITED Chairman Kim Heilenbach.

Join planning this trip from last spring, and members have worked diligently to finance the trip all by themselves. "They raised money through their project 43 — a professional development and awareness event 43 hours in Chicago, the RSO program and Opportunity Fund, through labor concessions, picking up trash on the quad, donating blood plasma, selling t-shirts and recruit friends to eat with them in restaurants where they got a percentage of sales, just to name some of their strategies of numerous" Eckrich said. Join also began planning spring break trip next year.

While there, join members will maintain a blog to reflect on what we learn and see outside the State of Illinois.

"I have no doubt in my mind that we will return with new ideas on urban education and education in General that we will bring to Redbird community, as well as continue to use throughout our careers education," said Heilenbach. "Spring break trips to UNITED are one of the most exciting and profitable development professional of the year!"
